Knowing Your Skin Type

Manufacturers often categorize skin types into three labels: sensitive, dry, normal, oily, and combination. Knowing what each of these mean can save you time, money, and the disappointment of purchasing the wrong products for your skin care needs.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is often prone to redness and itching. Irritation can come from environmental pollutants, cosmetics and toiletries. Products that are made for sensitive skin are generally made with natural or hypoallergenic ingredients. Unfortunately, even products made for sensitive skin can cause irritation. Everyone’s skin is different so what causes your skin to react may not cause someone else’s sensitive skin to react and vice versa. Find out what ingredients work best with your skin and look for them in your products.

Dry Skin

Dry skin does not naturally have adequate moisture and sebum, therefore it can be flakey, patchy and itchy if not properly taken care of. Products made for dry skin have moisturizing components that hydrate parched skin. If you have dry skin, make sure to moisturize as needed, especially before bed. Dry skin is also prone to premature aging so wear sunscreen daily, and invest in anti-aging products targeted for dry skin.

Normal Skin

Lucky you, your skin is quite happy as is! People with normal skin can generally use any product without a problem. Still, it is important to apply sunscreen and moisturize as needed.

Oily Skin

Oily skin creates excess sebum which can cause breakouts. The skin often looks shiny and greasy. Fortunately, there is a huge range of products specifically made for oily skin. Go for oil-free cleansers and toners. Makeup made for oily skin also reduces the appearance of shine, and powder on top mattifies the skin.

Combination Skin

Combination skin means you are dry in some areas, normal in some, and oily in others. Generally, people with combination skin are dry in the cheeks and oily in the T-zone (the area from your forehead to the bridge of your nose and on the chin.) Manufacturers do make products for combination skin. You may also find it helpful to use dry skin products where your skin is dry and oily skin products where your skin is oily.
